Did you know...
In January 1992, somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, storms raged and nearly 29,000 rubber duckies, frogs, beavers and turtles slipped out of a cargo ship into the cold and icy waters. Well, they still live on, floating from hither to yonder. Eleven years later they’re still finding their way to beaches throughout the land. More than 400 have already hit the shores from Hawaii to South Africa to the South Atlantic near Florida. Oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer has been tracking their journey since they started their ominous trek through our world of oceans. His study of drifting objects is a lifetime passion as he says that we know less about what floats on the ocean than what’s on the bottom. By tracking floating objects, he’s able to analyze the underlying currents. To that end, he is offering $100 to anyone who finds one of these toys on shore….but they must be the right ones….and with the tens of thousands distributed by the pool industry alone, he knows exactly which ones are the authentic ones.
What color were the turtles?
